Born in 1958 in Essaouira, Abdeslam Alikkane is a Berber from the region of Agadir. His family had black African servants, descendants of slaves, and it was from them that he developed his passion for Gnawa, learning to play the qraqeb at the age of 9. He plays in the marsaoui style and has become an established figure in Essaouira. He is particularly interested in the healing aspect of Gnawa and is greatly appreciated in the rituals and trance during lilas. He is today one of the brotherhood's most articulate authorities on Gnawa ceremony. He is thorough and serious about his art and is full of hope for the future of the music. He has performed at many international festivals, playing with Peter Gabriel, Gilberto Gil and Ray Lema, with whom he recorded the album Safi in 2000. He is considered to be one of the most well-known Gnawa Maâlems in the world and is one of the founders of the Essaouira Gnawa Festival where today he is artistic co-director.
